Seria reklam prasowych pudru Antiba, prasa ilustrowana, późne lata trzydzieste XX w.

The series of Antiba powder ads from illustrated magazines, late 1930's.

[Why to keep such a lovely face behind cards?  Using Antiba powder, you are looking charmingly even at the bridge lasting till the morning.]
[With the fox you looks beautiful, but it would be a hundred times more nicely, if for you didn't cover your lovely face with such a fresh complexion.  Only an Antiba powder is ensuring such a complexion.]
[Ah these fruits!  It is necessary to take them off the table, because are covering the view for us for you.  So pretty and matt complexion you could have only then, when you constantly are using Antiba powder which is uncomparable.]
[You are still reading and covering the face.  We ask to put the book back, because is pleasantly to look at you.  Since you are constantly using Antiba powder, your complexion is really ravishing.]
[The more transparent veil would be more appropriate.  We could then delight our eyes with the view of your miraculous complexion.  You owe such a complexion to permanent using Antiba powder.]

Antiba

Cennik wyrobów Spiessa z 1926 roku wymienia krem, otrąbki i dwa rodzaje pudru Abarid. Poza produkcją własnych kosmetyków Spiess dystrybuował również wyroby innych firm, m.in. Bourjois, Wolf & Sohn (Kaloderma) i in.  W zakładach Spiessa produkowano wiele surowców wykorzystywanych do produkcji kosmetyków – m.in. lanolinę, wyciągi tkankowe.
W 1936 asortyment Antiby jest już potężny, cennik wymienia dziewięć rodzajów kremów, płyny kosmetyczne (toniki i mleczka), pudry (puder Antiba w 12 odcieniach i puder „światłochronny”), żel i krem do rąk, produkty do higieny jamy ustnej Dentosan, szampon Savona i inne preparaty do pielęgnacji włosów i skóry głowy, mydła, depilatory, dezodoranty i inne wyroby kosmetyczne jak również spory asortyment wyrobów perfumeryjnych.

Antiba separated as the independent company from the Spiess' Factory  in 1929,  but as the brand of Spiess' cosmetics this name appears earlier  - "Antiba" department in the Spiess' Factory came into existence in 1924.  The price list of Spiess' products from 1926 is mentioning cream, beauty-brans and two kinds of Abarid powder. Apart from the production of own cosmetics brands Spiess also distributed products of other companies, among others Bourjois, Wolf & Sohn (Kaloderma) etc.  At Spiess' Factory a lot of raw materials used for the production of cosmetics were produced - among others lanolin and tissue extracts.
In 1936 the Antiba assortment is already huge, the price list is enumerating nine kinds of creams, cosmetic liquids (lotions and milks), powders (Antiba powder in 12 shades and "light-protecting" powder), gel and hand cream, Dentosan brand products for the dental hygiene, Savona shampoo and other preparations for the scalp and hair care, soaps, depilators, deodorants and other cosmetic products as well as the considerable range of perfumery products.

Beware hairdressers!

Legislation towards short hair.

German tribunals considered the entire sequence of conflicts recently, arising relating to the hairstyle "a la garconne".  It turns out that from the decision, taken by judges, that: 1. the truncation of hair without the prior agreement of the husband can be a right reason for the divorce, because is providing bad conduct of the better half; 2. authorizes the fiancé for knocking off, from oneself of all duties, both material  as well as moral, associated with the fact of engagement.  Hairdresser which dared to grant  the underage German girl head the shape of popular today "Bubikopf", not having received the consent of the father to it, can be called to account and sentenced  if isn't able to prove the client's age, for the objective, of "bodily injuries".  There are still judges in Berlin.

Ja, Anna Csillag, urodzona w Karłowicach na Morawach...

Pamiętacie, prawda? Anna Szałapak z włosami rusałki wyśpiewująca piwnicznie, do muzyki Koniecznego ... tekst reklamy kosmetyków Anny Csillag na porost włosów, połączony z fragmentami tekstów Leśmiana i Schulza. Tu znajdziecie różne wersje reklam tych produktów z terenu Europy centralnej, a poniżej przykład jednej z wersji polskich z lat dwudziestych XX w..

You remember, don't you?  Anna Szałapak with hair of the water nymph singing ... the text of  advert of Anna Csillag's cosmetics promoting hair growth, connected with fragments of texts of Leśmian and Schulz (music: Z. Konieczny).  Here you will find various versions of advertisements of these products from the area of central Europe, and above example of one of Polish versions from the 1920's.
... of course, you probably don't remember. Anna Szałapak is a member of artists' group Piwnica pod Baranami, still well known in Poland I hope. And here is the song:

Muzycznie i filmowo

Poniżej: Nagranie "Piosenki o Radionie" w wykonaniu Tadeusza Faliszewskiego.

Some time ago I demonstrated the fragment of notes of the Pixavon foxtrot advertising shampoo of the same name.  Apparently, the musical commercial was very popular before the war, apart from musical notations records were also distributed (Radion, Schicht-Lever S.A.)  The commune rumour tells and Wikipedia is repeating, that even Puccini created the ode (and rather than that thinking based on the size - text here - the very small ode, a kind of musical joke) for the Odol, functioning obviously on the Italian market. Below: the "Song about Radion" recording performed by Tadeusz Faliszewski.

Radion as the strong brand of the strong multi-national company was present also in cinema commercials, as similarly as today, projected before movies.  Below: advertisement from the South of Europe (could some Slavonic specialist listen to and explicitly determine the language?).

The music from the above advertisement was enough catchy, that remained in the consciousness of societies using Radion and is functioning at present as kind of a wedding march.  Evidence below.  Performers even don't know where from name "Radion" exists in the title of the march.

Since I'm writing about laundry, of course the Soap with a Stag has to appear.

And last but not least two commercials from the cycle "the advertisement and the education" promoting brushing teeth and Kalodont toothpaste.  The first commercial is Yugoslavian, the second  - Croatian.

Tajemniczy Tokalon

Temat o marce Tokalon wywołała Mariana, publikując stare reklamy tu i tu.
Kosmetyki Tokalon były dość często reklamowane w przedwojennej polskiej prasie, ale głównie w taniej prasie codziennej. Trzy najczęściej reklamowane produkty to: krem sportowy Tokalon, Krem Odżywczy Tokalon („różowy”), Krem Tokalon („biały”) i puder Tokalon. Zwłaszcza reklamy kremów zawierają sporo nierealnych do spełnienia deklaracji.

Mysterious Tokalon

The Tokalon subject evoked Mariana, publishing old advertisements here and here.
Tokalon cosmetics quite often have been advertised in the prewar Polish press, but mainly in the cheap newspapers.  Three most often advertised products are: Tokalon sport cream, Nourishing Tokalon Cream ("pink"), Tokalon Cream ("white") and Tokalon powder.  Especially advertisements of creams contain quite a lot of claims unrealistic for fulfilling.  This lack of the realism is regarding especially a time after which effects were supposed to appear ("wake up younger tomorrow morning"), however from a point of view of mechanisms of action the communication was rather correct. "Pink" cream was most probably based on some raw material rich in animal hormones, as some ads mentioned "extract from cells of young animals".  In the thirtieth years homone-based creams, were very popular and recommended for the aged skin.  The source of hormones was not only placenta, but also preserves of adrenal glands, thyroid gland, testicles etc..  It could be also e.g. cream rich in ceramides, since one of patents of the Tokalon company from the thirtieth is claiming use of tissue extracts among others of pig skin.   The "white" cream contained as active substance probably salicylic acid.
Archival patents are indicating, that Tokalon S.A. was a French company, in Poland a Warsaw Ontax company distributed its products.  Ads mentioned that Tokalon was Swiss brand (especially in earlier sources) or "Paris brand", professor Stejskal from Vienna is also quoted, as the author of the concept of applying cellular extracts.  Certainly in Poland one of versions of Tokalon powder was produced (inscription "home-produced product" on the package) and perhaps also sport cream.  This production was most probably a production only to the local market.  After 1945 the Tokalon brand disappeared from the Polish market.

On pictures: Tokalon ads from daily press (1930's)

[Younger with every morning. Today evening. Tomorrow morning.]
[One tube will bring you the white, smooth, velvet skin or the double repayment of spent money.  Use this unusual proposal today. (...)  It contains pure cream and oil along with miraculously bleaching and enhancing ingredients (...)].
[The last cosmetic novelties.  New etheric face powder.  Unusual beauty of the complexions with the minimal cost.]
[Beach suntan at home, in the own room, thanks to new sport cream.  He prevents burns and is giving golden suntan thanks to his new, recently discovered ingredients.  Apply it before coming off to the beach or walk in the sun.  Ah, what it is beautiful!  Fine tone without the burn.]

Reklamy sygnowane

Do nielicznych wyjątków należą prace Tadeusza Gronowskiego (Radion, Schicht-Lever S.A.) i Artura Horowicza (Horowitza) (różne marki koncernu Schicht-Lever S.A.). Poniżej przykład reklamy sygnowanej przez przedstawiciela lwowskiej szkoły plakatu – Kazimierza Manna.

Signed advertisements

Ads of cosmetics and home care products have rarely been signed by their authors.  Works of Tadeusz Gronowski (Radion, Schicht-Lever S.A.) and of Artur Horowicz (Horowitz) (different brands of Schicht-Lever S.A.)  belong to few exceptions. Above: example of the advertising signed by the representative of the Lvov school of the poster - Kazimierz Mann.

Wpływ na dziecko drogą do zwiększenia sprzedaży

Nic nowego prawda?

Influence on the child as a way to increasing sales.

It is nothing new here, isn't it?  The way through the child to the mother of course was exploited also before the war  for the promotion of cosmetics and household products.  Printing leaflets directed at children was the most frequent solution. There were  educational leaflets (Odol), propagating the correct dental hygiene and also leaflets just-for-fun, smuggled advertising contents referred to children and their mothers.  Below two examples: Polish leaflet promoting the Radion washing powder  (Schicht-Lever), in the form of illustrated short story about the trip to the grandmother (using Radion regularly) and Czechoslovakian leaflet promoting Otamyr preparation for the lavage of fabrics after the  washing.  Czechs as a matter of fact regularly issued leaflets with fairy tales for children which had on the back cover various advertising texts  (concerning different groups of food and functional products).  Two last pictures are showing other solution - paper, rewound tape  with a picture story (of course promotional), was mounted into the cardboard pad.

On pictures:

[On the front page: Mummies, don't forget to read  the  back cover!  On the back cover:  Nice children.  Your mum is washing with powder?  Let her try Otamyr solution out, it is our national product, but equal with the best.  Tell mum Otamyr will soften water, will dissolve dirt and will bleach the wash and in addition it doesn't contain any chlorine.]

Fabryka Falkiewicza

Wacław Falkiewicz założył swoją firmę w 1911 roku w Paryżu. Po I Wojnie Światowej przeniósł produkcję do Poznania. W latach 30-tych marki kosmetyków Falkiewicza należały do najszerzej reklamowanych na polskim rynku. Asortyment fabryki Falkiewicza obejmował prawie wszystkie najważniejsze segmenty ówczesnego rynku kosmetycznego: kremy pielęgnacyjne (Śnieg Tatrzański, Krem Tatrzański), kremy ochronne (krem Lipowy), kremy i wody toaletowe do cery tłustej (Smile), szampony do włosów ciemnych i jasnych (Śnieg Tatrzański), preparaty do higieny jamy ustnej (Odonto) oraz szeroki asortyment wyrobów perfumeryjnych. W folderach reklamowych do promocji marki Śnieg Tatrzański Falkiewicz wykorzystywał wizerunek Poli Negri.
W 1950r. na mocy zarządzenia Ministra Przemysłu Rolnego i Spożywczego, zarząd nad fabryką Falkiewicza powierzono Zjednoczonym Zakładom Przemysłu Kosmetycznego w Warszawie.
