Wizerunkiem Normy Schearer wspierało swoją kampanię mydło toaletowe Lux (Schicht-Lever S.A.), Pola Negri występowała w reklamach kosmetyków Śnieg Tatrzański Falkiewicza. Najdalej w tego typu kampanii poszła poznańska fabryka kosmetyków Żaka wydając albumik z fotosami polskich aktorów i aktorek okraszonymi reprodukcjami autografów zachwalających kosmetyki Żaka.

Movie stars advertise cosmetics

Backing up an advertising campaigns of cosmetics with images of movie stars is such an old trick as very history of the cinema and the industrial manufacture of cosmetics.  Readers of the Polish press at the end of thirties were supposed, as similarly as today, to watch the advertisements of imported Max Factor cosmetics recommended by Hollywood stars.  The Lux bath soap (Schicht-Lever S.A.) supported its campaign up with the image of  Norma Scheare, Pola Negri appeared in ads of Snieg Tatrzański [Tatra Snow] cosmetics by Falkiewicz.  Farthest in the campaign of this type a Poznań Żak's factory of cosmetics went publishing the small book with stills of Polish actors and actresses spiced up with reproductions of autographs recommending Żak perfumes and beauty treatments. In the press this campaign was refelected by Przemysławka ads which promoted Jan Kiepura.  Żak as a matter of fact, quite maliciously, provided the small book of illustrations with the epigraph meaning "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, alone you don't know what you have" what was still standing both with reference to movie stars as well as cosmetics.

Wpływ na dziecko drogą do zwiększenia sprzedaży

Nic nowego prawda?

Influence on the child as a way to increasing sales.

It is nothing new here, isn't it?  The way through the child to the mother of course was exploited also before the war  for the promotion of cosmetics and household products.  Printing leaflets directed at children was the most frequent solution. There were  educational leaflets (Odol), propagating the correct dental hygiene and also leaflets just-for-fun, smuggled advertising contents referred to children and their mothers.  Below two examples: Polish leaflet promoting the Radion washing powder  (Schicht-Lever), in the form of illustrated short story about the trip to the grandmother (using Radion regularly) and Czechoslovakian leaflet promoting Otamyr preparation for the lavage of fabrics after the  washing.  Czechs as a matter of fact regularly issued leaflets with fairy tales for children which had on the back cover various advertising texts  (concerning different groups of food and functional products).  Two last pictures are showing other solution - paper, rewound tape  with a picture story (of course promotional), was mounted into the cardboard pad.

Fabryka Falkiewicza

Wacław Falkiewicz założył swoją firmę w 1911 roku w Paryżu. Po I Wojnie Światowej przeniósł produkcję do Poznania. W latach 30-tych marki kosmetyków Falkiewicza należały do najszerzej reklamowanych na polskim rynku. Asortyment fabryki Falkiewicza obejmował prawie wszystkie najważniejsze segmenty ówczesnego rynku kosmetycznego: kremy pielęgnacyjne (Śnieg Tatrzański, Krem Tatrzański), kremy ochronne (krem Lipowy), kremy i wody toaletowe do cery tłustej (Smile), szampony do włosów ciemnych i jasnych (Śnieg Tatrzański), preparaty do higieny jamy ustnej (Odonto) oraz szeroki asortyment wyrobów perfumeryjnych. W folderach reklamowych do promocji marki Śnieg Tatrzański Falkiewicz wykorzystywał wizerunek Poli Negri.
W 1950r. na mocy zarządzenia Ministra Przemysłu Rolnego i Spożywczego, zarząd nad fabryką Falkiewicza powierzono Zjednoczonym Zakładom Przemysłu Kosmetycznego w Warszawie.

Falkiewicz’s factory

Wacław Falkiewicz established his company in 1911 in Paris.  After the World War I he moved the production to Poznań.  In 1930’s brands of Falkiewicz’s cosmetics belonged to most widely advertised on the Polish market.  The assortment of the Falkiewicz factory embraced almost all most important sections of the contemporary cosmetic market: face creams (Śnieg Tatrzański [Tatra Snow], Krem Tatarzański [Tatra Cream]), sport creams (krem Lipowy [Limewood cream]), creams and toilet waters to the oily complexion (Smile), shampoos to dark and fair hair (Tatra Snow), preparations to the dental hygiene (Odonto) and wide assortment of perfume products.  In an advertising brochures Falkiewicz used for the promotion of the Śnieg Tatrzański brand image of Pola Negri.  In 1950 on the legal validity of the order of the Agricultural and Food Industry Minister, the management of the Falkiewicz’s factory was entrusted to the United Plants of the Cosmetic Industry in Warsaw (Zjednoczone Zakłady Przemysłu Kosmetycznego w Warszawie).

Skleroza

We wczorajszym wpisie pominęłam poznańska fabrykę chemiczną Barcikowskiego. Barcikowski produkował m.in. kremy Pea i Erbe, kosmetyki dla dzieci i wyroby do higieny jamy ustnej, chociaż rzeczywiście gros jego produkcji stanowiły farmaceutyki.

In the yesterday entry I omitted Poznań chemical factory of Barcikowski. Barcikowski produced Pea creams and Erbe, baby care cosmetics and dental hygiene products , although  pharmaceuticals constituted the majority of his production, indeed.

Poza wyżej wymienionymi w Poznaniu działała jeszcze fabryka mydła Regera („z tukanem”), która jednak zakończyła działalność w  1932 roku a zabudowania fabryczne przejął Knorr.

Poznań: an introduction
In Poznań in the interwar period in the scope of the production of cosmetics four companies are dominating - two big: PEBECO joint-stock company with Nivea brand and the Falkiewicz’s factory which similarly to the Warsaw Puls offers a wide assortment of products, and two a little bit smaller companies: Stempniewicz’s factory with the leading brand Iste and the Żak company with the leading brand Heza.
PEBECO joint-stock company in Poznań (PEBECO – Polish Beiersdorf’s Products) started its activity in 1929. The Poznań company unit was already the second Polish Beiersdorf’s  unit, first - a manufacturing plant of Beiersdorf’s Pebeco  was registered in Katowice in 1925. The first Polish press advertisements of Nivea cosmetics are still giving the Katowice address of the company.
Outside higher listed in Poznań a factory of Reger’s soap worked (producing  “soap with the toucan” soap brand), however finished  its activity in 1932 and Knorr took over factory buildings.

Czarna dziura

The black hole.
This time the post-war exhibit. From the kind: “If I didn't have it in my hand, I wouldn't believe”. In the first photograph is the jar of  Nivea cream produced before the war by the Pebeco factory in Poznań. Flat, glass small jar - with the Nivea inscription, metal lid - on the border inscriptions: Poznań and Pebeco. Diameter of 5 cm, so this is the small package (the regular one had the diameter ca. 7.5 cm). That is everything as it should be. And on the second? Name? As it should be: Nivea. The claim - without changes. Flat small jar glass? so as prewar. A producer name disagrees. On the lid is a Polfa logo, and on the border „Z.Z.P. Farm. Warszawa wytwórnia 8, Nr 362.”. That means:  United Factories of the Pharmaceutical Industry in Warsaw. Of course I started searching for documents, allowing for dating the exhibit and there is exactly a title black hole. Every sources are announcing a bit of different dates, so without the visit in State archives most probably I won't make a success of precise dating. The history probably, I am underlining: probably, looked as follow:  the act on the nationalization of the industry (1946) caused that Pebeco became property of the State Treasury, together with its registered trademarks, patents and so on. In 1948 came into existence United Factories of the Pharmaceutical Industry which charged the Nivea brand and for some time it dropped popular cream to the market. Of course the above mentioned scenario  isn't making impossible a parallel production of Nivea cream by nationalised Pebeco  (and then Lechia) in Poznan and Polfa in Warsaw. If I’ll establish details I will inform  you, of course.
